What Are Hershey Cocoa Brownies?

Chocolate brownies, also known simply as brownies, are square or rectangular chocolate baked confections.

Brownies come in a variety of forms and may be either fudgy or cakey, depending on their density. Brownies often, but not always, have a glossy “skin” on their upper crust.

They may also include nuts, frosting, cream cheese, chocolate chips, or other ingredients. A variation made with brown sugar and vanilla rather than chocolate in the batter is called a blond brownie or blondie.

The brownie was developed in the United States at the end of the 19th century and popularized there during the first half of the 20th century. In 1899, the first-known recipe for brownies was published in Machias Cookbook. They were called “Brownie’s Food”. The recipe appears on page 23 in the cake section of the book. Marie Kelley from Whitewater, Wisconsin, created the recipe.

Chocolate brownies are typically eaten by hand, often accompanied by milk, served warm with ice cream “a la mode”, topped with whipped cream, or sprinkled with powdered sugar and fudge.

In Canada they are common homemade treats and are also popular on restaurant dessert menus, at pastry shops and cafes.

One of our favourite renditions of the classic dessert is this Hershey Brownie recipe. It features 3 products from the famous American chocolatier: Hershey Cocoa Powder, Hershey Chocolate Chips and Hershey Milk Chocolate Bars!

Hershey’s Chocolate

The Hershey Company, commonly known as Hershey’s, is an American multinational company and one of the largest chocolate manufacturers in the world. Its headquarters are in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Today Hershey’s chocolate is available across the United States, and in over 60 countries worldwide.

The famous chocolate company was originally founded by Milton S. Hershey in 1894. The famous food entrepreneur first found success in a caramel company. After seeing chocolate-making machines for the first time at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Hershey sold his caramel company to concentrate his energy on chocolate. To people who questioned him, he said, “Caramels are just a fad, but chocolate is a permanent thing.”

In 1896, Hershey built a milk-processing plant so he could create and refine a recipe for his milk chocolate candies. In 1899, he developed the “Hershey process,” which is less sensitive to milk quality than traditional methods. In 1900, he began manufacturing Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars, also known as Hershey’s Bars or Hershey Bars.

Hershey’s is now famous for making many chocolate products including its iconic Kisses, M&M’s, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kat Mr. Goodbar, and Almond Joy. It also produces products for home cooks and bakers like cocoa, chocolate syrup, and chocolate chips.

  • We’ve used canola oil in this recipe but you can substitue with any flavourless vegetable oil or even use melted butter.
  • We’ve used Hershey Milk Chocolate Bars in this brownie recipe but you can use the brands dark chocolate bar if you prefer.

How Do You Know When Brownies Are Baked?

The best way to check if brownies are done baking is with a toothpick.

Poke a toothpick into the middle of the brownies. It should come out with a few moist crumbs on it, but shouldn’t be wet. It’s better to under bake brownies rather than over bake them, especially if you’re looking to enjoy fudgy brownies.

Storing This Hershey Brownie Recipe

If you have leftovers, cover the bars in plastic wrap and store it in the fridge for 2-3 days.

You can freeze leftover brownies for up to 3 months and they’ll still taste fresh. Be sure to slice the bars before storing in the freezer so you can easily remove one or two when a craving for chocolate hits!
