What Is Lemon Dill Hummus?

Hummus is a Middle Eastern dip, spread, or savoury dish made from cooked, mashed chickpeas blended with tahini, lemon juice, and garlic. The standard garnish in the Middle East includes olive oil, a few whole cooked chickpeas, parsley, and paprika.

In Middle Eastern cuisine, it is usually eaten as a dip, with pita bread. In the West, it is produced industrially, and is often served as a healthy snack or appetizer with pita chips and crudités.

The earliest known written recipes for a dish resembling hummus are recorded in cookbooks written in Cairo in the 13th century. Today it is often served as part of a meze or as an accompaniment to falafel, grilled chicken, fish, or eggplant.

Our creamy Lemon Dill Hummus offers a spin on the classic recipe flavouring the classic chickpea dip with fragrant dill weed, which gives it a slightly green colour.

Travel to the Middle East by Cooking Dill Hummus at Home

I love traveling to the Middle East and North Africa.

As a professional food and travel journalist, I’ve had the opportunity to enjoy amazing meals in the Middle East, from authentic markets to award winning restaurants.

For over ten years, I’ve been on the hunt for the best Lemon Dill Hummus via adventures that had me zig-zagging through Morocco, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan, Israel and Dubai. You guessed it! Some of my fondest food memories while traveling in the Middle East include colourful eye-popping meze platters featuring mutabbal, tabbouleh and Dill Hummus.

I ate a creamy bowl of Dill Hummus at a traditional Moroccan riad, on food tours of Istanbul and Bodrum, accompanied by Egyptian tea on a Nile Cruise and in bustling market in Cairo, late night snack in Amman, al fresco market lunch in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem and as a pita spread at a massive Middle Eastern barbecue in the middle of the Dubai desert while belly dancers twirled under the night sky.

Haven’t traveled to the Middle East before? It may be helpful to first sample Lemon Dill Hummus at a local restaurant to better understand how the dip is served. You’ll get an idea for the desired thickness of the dip, intensity of dill flavour and and perfect eye-popping garnishes. You’ll also find inspiration on what to pair with hummus such as such as falafel, kibbeh, shawarma and kebab.

My Family Loves Creamy Dill Hummus

When my family moved to Oakville the first restaurant we visited was a local Egyptian and Lebanese restaurant called Agabi. Ranked as one of the best restaurants in Oakville, Agabi became our family’s go-to Middle Eastern take out joint.

We’d always order a meze platter featuring labneh, hummus, stuffed grape leaves, falafel and mutabbal.

After falling in love with the cuisine of the Levant at our favourite local restaurant, we enjoyed vacations to the Middle East, feasting on endless bowls of dill hummus, and falafel stuffed pita.

I knew my parents would love this Lemon Dill Hummus recipe because they enjoy healthy dips, meze snack platters and dishes featuring fragrant dill.

I made this recipe at our cottage one summer afternoon as a snack to enjoy on the dock. My mother has a lush backyard herb garden and plucked fresh dill to flavour the hummus so the recipe is practically farm to fork!

If you’ve got company coming over and are looking for a healthy vegan or vegetarian dip this Lemon Dill Hummus recipe is always a crowd pleaser!

Lemon Dill Hummus Recipe Cooking Tips

If it’s your first time making Lemon Dill Hummus at home be sure to review our detailed step-by-step recipe below. Here are some helpful tips and tricks to get you started:

  • In our recipe we suggest using a heavy duty Vitamix style blender to ensure the dip is as creamy and smooth as possible.
  • We’ve used canned chickpeas in this recipe to make the preparation quick and easy but if you’ve got time and want to save money feel free to soak dried chickpeas the day before and boil them until tender.
  • We’ve used raw garlic in this recipe but you can substitute for roasted garlic if you prefer.
  • We always suggest using fresh finely chopped dill in this recipe but if you want to use dried dill that is possible just reduce the amount to 2 tbsp.
  • If you want to elevate the dish before serving, why not sprinkle the hummus with toasted pine nuts or roasted almonds?
  • Add a drizzle of pomegranate molasses and sprinkle of pomegranate seeds to add additional sweetness and eye appeal.

Storing Dip

If you have leftover Lemon Dill Hummus you can store it in the fridge in an airtight container for 4-5 days.

We do not suggest freezing hummus as it is not a cooked product and can spoil easily when thawed. It also has a tendency to separate after thawing from frozen reducing its creamy texture.
