Travel to Chile by Making Turron de Vino at Home
I love traveling to Latin America.
As a professional food and travel journalist, I’ve had the opportunity to enjoy amazing meals in Central America, South America and the Caribbean, from traditional markets to award winning restaurants.
For over ten years, I’ve been on the hunt for the best Chilean dessert recipe. I’ve embarked on culinary adventures at local restaurants in Mexico, Cuba, Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Curacao, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil.
In Chile, I’ve spooned through pretty glasses of traditional Turron de Vino at restaurants in Santiago, Valparasio, Vina del Mar, Isla del Negra, Pucon, and Isle de Chiloe.
Chilean Red Wine Meringue is known for being creamy and light. Its ingredients contrast nicely, offering delicious results.
Egg whites and sugar are beaten with red wine until they form a cloudy meringue. It gives the Chilean dessert a unique grape flavour. Chopped walnuts add a nutty undertone and crunchy texture.
After enjoying your first few spoonfuls, you’ll realize why a glass of Red Wine Meringue is a must-try when visiting Chile!
Best Wine To Use In Turron de Vino
Turron de Vino is always prepared with red wine, giving the classic Chilean dessert an attractive light purple colour.
When visiting Santiago it’s easy to visit nearby wineries by hopping on the subway. The towering Andes mountains give way to scenic vineyards. On our visit we enjoyed a tour of Chile’s 8th largest wine producer, Concha Y Toro.
Authentic Turron de Vino should be prepared with a Chilean wine of course. The country is famous for its bold red wines. We recommend using a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmenere or Syrah.

My Family Loves Homemade Turron de Vino
My family loves desserts and wine so Turron de Vino is an obvious winner at dinner!
After traveling to Chile I wanted to share my favourite Chilean dessert recipe so prepared this creamy Red Wine Meringue parfait at the cottage in the summer.
I particularly like to make this dessert after I’ve made homemade ice cream as I always have leftover egg whites that need to get used up. It’s also an excellent option if you’ve got a half empty bottle of red wine loitering on your kitchen counter.
Turron de Vino is the best dessert to serve to red wine lovers. It’s rare to spoon through a dessert that tastes like red wine. We find those who have never tried it are surprised and delighted after they taste their first scoop.
Adding chopped nuts over each glass before serving to is ideal as it adds a desirable nutty flavour and addictive crunchy texture.
