Enjoy a Taste of Tex-Mex Cuisine

I love traveling to Mexico!

I’ve had the opportunity to eat my way through Playa Del Carmen, Chichen Itza, Merida, Los Cabos, Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta.

What I find most fascinating is Mexico’s distinct regional food cultures. Much like the regional cuisines found in France, Germany, Italy or Spain, each region of Mexico prepares its own local specialties using fresh seasonal ingredients.

Fajita Tacos are an American invention, a popular dish created by Mexican immigrants in the southern United States who wanted to create a taste of home with ingredients available at their local grocery store.

Tex-Mex cuisine is an American regional cuisine that derives from the culinary creations of the Tejano people of Texas. It later spread from border states to the rest of the country and Canada.

It’s easy to find Tex-Mex classics like fajitas, chili con carne and nachos served at Mexican restaurants in California, Arizona, New Mexico, Louisiana, Florida and Georgia.

Toronto even has its own Tex-Mex restaurant in Little Italy on College Street called Hotmess Tex Mex. You’ll find it on our list of Toronto’s Best Mexican Restaurants.

Whether you’re planning an American road trip or jaunt to a Mexican beach, impress friends and family by cooking the best Chicken Fajita Tacos at home.

Best Meat for Homemade Fajita Tacos

Researching the best meat for homemade Fajita Tacos? Traditionally Tex-Mex restaurants serve fajitas with beef or chicken.

Our recipe for chicken fajita tacos suggests using boneless, skinless chicken thighs. The dark meat on a chicken is more flavourful thanks to the higher fat content. You can use chicken breasts but they dry out easily and aren’t as flavourful.

If you’re more of a beef eater, we suggest sourcing rump, skirt or flank steak. These tougher cuts marinate well and soften when cooking.

Looking to make easy vegetarian fajitas? If you’re keen to cook a Meatless Monday meal or have a vegan or meat-free friend coming to dinner there are plenty of options.

You can prepare easy vegetarian fajitas by simply removing the chicken from this recipe. The spicy marinated vegetables cooked with beans, corn and avocado are simple and satisfying. If you’re looking for a heartier filling, we suggest adding sautéed mushrooms or Mexican roasted cauliflower.

We think the best chicken fajita tacos are prepared with thigh meat as its more flavourful. Our fragrant spice mix ensures a spicy and sweet flavour that pairs nicely with toppings such as sour cream, cilantro and sliced avocado. We’ve also added freshly squeezed lime juice and tequila to give the recipe an additional kick.

Be sure to keep a close eye on the skillet while you are sautéing the vegetables and chicken. There’s nothing worse than eating fajita tacos filled with tough, overcooked chicken and burnt vegetables.

My Family Loves Fajita Tacos

Growing up one of my families favourite dinners was chicken fajita tacos. In the 90s my mother joined Weight Watchers and they had a popular low fat and low carb recipe for chicken fajitas.

The healthy recipe was so quick and easy to prepare she often made chicken fajita tacos for us at the cottage in Muskoka after a long day spent swimming or lounging in the sun on the dock.

I’ve reworked my mothers recipe to suit my own tastes, adding a splash of tequila and a more spicy marinade. As kids we’d always treat fajita taco night as a DIY food party. We loved filling our own taco shells and topping them with sour cream, shredded cheese, salsa and guacamole.
