Bangkok Afternoon Tea History

High Tea, also known as Afternoon Tea, is a royal ritual, introduced in Britain in the early 1840s. The culinary tradition evolved into a mini meal to help stave off hunger pains before the evening meal at 8pm.

British Afternoon Tea was initially launched as a private social event for ladies looking to climb the echelons of high society. It wasn’t until Queen Victoria embraced the Afternoon Tea ritual that it became a more well known, larger scale “tea reception.” These historic receptions often included over two hundred guests who would drop in between the hours of 4pm and 7pm.

Throughout EnglandScotland and Wales today, Afternoon Tea is typically enjoyed on special occasions. It’s a posh indulgence for piping hot tea or iced tea lovers looking to celebrate a birthday, baby shower, pre-wedding party, Christmas or Mother’s Day.

We’ve traveled around the world in search of the best afternoon tea. Here are some of our favourite places to enjoy Afternoon Tea outside of Bangkok:

Romantic Afternoon Tea in Bangkok

Bangkok is without a doubt the best city in Thailand to indulge in Afternoon Tea.

Afternoon Tea enthusiasts are spoilt for choice as many luxury hotels in Bangkok offer elegant surroundings and Instagram-worthy pastries. Outside of the city’s hotel circuit, visitors can also enjoy loose leaf, crustless sandwiches and scones at dedicated tea lounges and cafes.

So how does one determine the best afternoon tea in Bangkok?

It really depends on your tastes and budget. If you’re looking to splurge on a special occasion we suggest booking Afternoon Tea at one of Bangkok’s luxury hotels. St. Regis, Shangri-La, Capella, Four Seasons, and The Peninsula all have a tradition of serving exquisite high tea.

Vegetarians and vegans and those with food intolerances who need to eat gluten-free will find happiness as many of the city’s top pastry chefs offer alternatives to unique dietary needs.

We suggest contacting your preferred Bangkok Afternoon Tea venue regarding their current rates. Many hotel’s offer discounted prices during weekdays, with premium rates on weekends. Prices for Afternoon Tea in Bangkok can also rise during special occasions like Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. During these special holidays the inflated price may include a complimentary flute of champagne or sweet smelling rose.
