Choosing A Flight From Canada To Thailand

As a professional travel journalist I’ve had the opportunity to visit Thailand 5 times!

On my first visit in 2008 I instantly fell in love with the “land of smiles,” backpacking on a shoestring to Bangkok, Sukothai, Chiang Mai, Krabi and Koh Phi Phi. On more recent trips I explored the luxurious islands of Phuket and Koh Samui.

Having visited over 90 countries in my career, I can without hesitation exclaim that Thailand is one of my top 5 favourite countries in the world to visit! It’s just a shame that Canada and Thailand are on opposite ends of the globe, which makes getting there an arduous journey that requires a lot of research and planning.

Historically, if you wanted to book a flight from Canada to Thailand you’d have to fly via a minimum of 1 connection through airports in East Asia like Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong.

In 2022 Air Canada launched the first ever direct flight from North America to Thailand, via its seasonal Vancouver to Bangkok direct flight, which operates from Vancouver starting December 1 and the last return flight from Bangkok is on May 3.

Flight From Canada To Thailand With Air Canada

In 2023 I planned an epic 2 month trip to Thailand.

I would be departing from my home in Toronto the day after Thanksgiving in early October and returning in mid December just in time for Christmas.

Due to the dates of my travel, I was able to book two different Air Canada flight routes: Toronto to Thailand via a short Tokyo connection and BKK to YVR direct.

If you are booking return flights from Canada to Thailand between December and May when the Air Canada Vancouver to Bangkok route is active travel between the countries is a breeze.

If you’re looking to book Thailand flights from Canada between May and November the best route is on Air Canada via Tokyo.

Since there are no direct flights from Toronto to Bangkok, I knew I’d always have to connect at another airport before landing in Thailand. If you live in British Columbia and can easily take the direct Air Canada Vancouver to Bangkok flight let’s just say I’m jealous!

Toronto To Bangkok Flight Route

I booked the best Toronto to Bangkok flight itinerary with Air Canada.

You’ll want to book the flight from Toronto (YYZ) to Bangkok (BKK) via Tokyo Narita (NRT), which departs at 1pm and arrives into Japan at 3pm local time.

The average flight time from Toronto to Tokyo is 13.5 hours.

My short connection in Tokyo was just over 2 hours, giving me plenty of time to hop on the last leg of my trip with Thai Airways, a Star Alliance partner airline.

The average flight time from Tokyo to Bangkok is 6.5 hours.

If you do the quick math, the total time to get from Toronto to Thailand with Air Canada is 22 hours.

I arrived at Pearson International Airport over 3 hours before my flight from Canada to Thailand so I could maximize my time at the luxurious airport lounge.

24 hours prior to my flight I used the Air Canada app to check into my flight to make the day of travel truly stressless. I highly recommend using the Air Canada app as it offers helpful features like online check in, flight change updates, and electronic boarding pass.

Upon arrival I rolled my carry-on to the Air Canada Business Class check-in, which includes concierge service, priority security for accelerated screening, and priority baggage delivery upon arrival.

Wondering what the Bangkok to Vancouver flight time is?

Since I would need to be at the airport at the crack of down at 5:30am I spent the previous 2 nights at the nearby Le Méridien Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok Golf Resort & Spa.

The luxury resort offers a complimentary shuttle to the Bangkok International Airport. Since the hotel is just 15 minutes away, it’s the perfect property to enjoy a massage and game of golf before flying over 16 hours back to Canada.
