What Is A Passion Fruit Martini?

The martini is a classic cocktail, an American invention typically prepared with gin and vermouth. It’s traditionally garnished with an olive or a lemon twist.

By 1922 the martini reached its most recognizable form in which London dry gin and dry vermouth are combined at a ratio of 2:1, stirred in a mixing glass with ice cubes, with the optional addition of orange or aromatic bitters, then strained into a chilled cocktail glass.

The exact origin of the martini is unclear. The name is thought to derive from the Martini brand of vermouth. Another popular theory suggests it evolved from a cocktail called the Martinez served sometime in the early 1860s at the Occidental Hotel in San Francisco, which people frequented before taking an evening ferry to the nearby town of Martinez, California.

The world’s favourite spy James Bond often ordered vodka martinis, which substitute vodka for gin, to be “shaken, not stirred”, following Harry Craddock’s 1930’s The Savoy Cocktail Book, which prescribes shaking for all its martini recipes.

In the early 2000s the popularity of the HBO show Sex and the City made martini sipping all the rage again. Martini bars popped up in big city’s across North America, serving the classic iteration as well as fruity concoctions as brands like Absolut and Smirnoff launched a parade of fruit-flavoured vodkas.

Our Passion Fruit Martini pays homage to the classic cocktail by combining premium vodka with tropical passion fruit juice. You can serve it in a classic martini glass or coup.

What Is Passion Fruit?

The term ‘passion fruit’ in English comes from the passion flower, as an English translation of the Latin genus name, Passiflora.

Passion fruits are round or oval, and range from a width of 1.5 to 3 inches. They can be yellow, red, purple, and green.

The fruits have a juicy edible centre composed of a large number of seeds. The part of the fruit that is eaten is the pulpy juicy seeds. Passion fruits can also be squeezed to make juice. It is also used in pastries and cocktails like this Passion Fruit Martini recipe.

Passion fruit tastes like a blend of sour and sweet with a very floral finish and citrus notes. It’s a little like pineapple or yellow kiwi, though some say it tastes like grapefruit, pear, and guava.

Before your guests arrive store the vodka bottle in the freezer so it’s well chilled when you’re ready to shake up the drinks.

We like to garnish the glass with a passion fruit float but you can also serve with a lime wedge or dehydrated citrus wheel.
