Toronto Massage Therapy Research

As a professional travel journalist I’ve had the opportunity to visit hundreds of the world’s best spas.

I’ve enjoyed a mind-expanding 4 hands massage in Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, traditional lomi lomi at Four Seasons Resort Hualālai in Hawaii, authentic Thai at Ritz-Carlton Phulay Bay, a Dead Sea mud bath in Israel, traditional Balinese massage at the St. Regis Bali and hammam & gommage at Four Seasons Casablanca in Morocco.

There have been periods of my life where I’ve been on press trips researching and writing an article on the best spas in a particular region. I have to pinch myself when thinking about that month I visited 15 luxury spas in Bali. What a dream! During those work assignments I’d often have a 2-3 hour massage treatment every other day. Someone’s gotta do it!

After my extensive experience learning about unique massage modalities from Bora Bora to the Maldives, I took it upon myself to go on a local adventure in search of the best RMT in Toronto.

Our guide to massage therapy in Toronto includes practitioners who focus on science-informed techniques that cater to sports injuries as well as luxury spas and health clinics offering romantic couples massage and traditional massage therapy for the “hunched at the desk office worker.”

I’ve become a bonafide massage therapy nerd! So much so, that I purchased Complete Massage, an educational how-to book for those looking to master the art of massage at home.

Booking A Massage In Toronto

Is it your first time seeing a registered massage therapist in Toronto? Or perhaps you’re new to the city and keen to find a talented RMT downtown that you can see regularly?

If you’ve got health benefits at work we suggest taking advantage of Toronto RMT services throughout the year, especially if you work in an office environment where you find yourself sitting for long periods of time.

We suggest dividing the massage therapy benefits you receive annually by the cost of each therapy session. That will help to determine how often you need to book your appointments throughout the year. For example, if your company covers $500 in massage therapy each year and your Toronto RMT charges $100 a session you can book 5 treatments annually.

We like to enjoy one massage therapy appointment each season and an additional session in December to treat ourselves to a moment of rest and relaxation before the busy holiday period.

The RMT’s in Toronto we talked to mentioned many people leave their massage appointment bookings to the end of the year. There seems to always be a rush to book registered massage therapy appointments in the Fall before Christmas. In an effort to avoid being disappointed, book your massage therapy appointments in Toronto a few weeks in advance for the busy November and December period.

Elmspa’s must-try signature massage in Toronto is the Deep Siam Massage, which features a heated Thai herbal compress which restores and redirects energy while the herbs and essential oils repair the body by balancing the senses, calming the nerves and revitalizing the skin and tissues.

Health Haven

568 St Clair Ave W, 416-551-4486

Health Haven opened on St Clair West in March, 2020. Owner Dr Jordanna Clarfield-Henry has been a practicing chiropractic for over 15 years.

Health Haven features 4 treatment rooms and is open 7 days a week. Clarfield-Henry shared, “We offer chiropractic, registered massage therapy, cranial-sacral therapy, acupuncture, yoga therapy, psychotherapy, and Thai Massage and Reiki with MaryAnne Bernardo.

Bernardo shared, “Thai massage and Reiki are rooted in love and compassion, and for me, that is the heart of what I do. My volunteer work at Toronto Rape Crisis Center Multicultural Women Against Rape made it evident to me that many folks are unable to access services like massage due to a combination of financial constraints and/or personal history, or trauma.”

Bernardo specializes in Thai massage and Reiki, “What I like about these treatments, and what makes them unique is that they are ancient healing modalities, which view the body as an energetic system. The goal is to restore energetic balance back to the body, enhancing the body’s natural ability to heal itself. The fact that the client remains clothed during the treatment makes Thai massage accessible for those who may not feel comfortable removing their clothes. I also practice the tradition of foot washing. This practice is intended as an act of compassion, and I do whatever I can to make my clients comfortable and to feel loved,” said Bernardo.

Looking to try a taste of Thai massage therapy in Toronto? Bernardo explains the unique technique, “With Thai massage, the practitioner guides the client through a series of postures, stretching and applying acupressure along the body’s energy lines. During the treatment clients are asked to breathe mindfully. This helps the client  move out of their head and into the experience of the treatment. Thai massage can be adjusted to suit the needs of all clients, ages and abilities. It improves circulation, flexibility and mobility. The overall effect is one of deep relaxation, rejuvenation, physical and mental well-being.”

The Integrative Health Institute is located in the King East Design District in the heart of downtown Toronto. Health services are offered in a heritage building that was originally built in 1868.

Integrative Health Institute features 5 treatment rooms and an IV suite. The team consists of five Registered Massage Therapists, five Naturopathic Doctors, three Social Workers, one Chiropractor, one Physiotherapist and two Nutritionists.

Dr. Erin Wiley shared, “Our physical medicine team, including our Massage Therapists, Chiropractor and Physiotherapist, break down all obstacles to movement and help our clients build strength, increase function, relieve pain and reduce tension. Our knowledge base is extensive and our therapists have upward of 20 years of experience in the industry.”

Yvette Marcek is an RMT in Toronto who practices massage therapy at the Integrative Health Institute. Marcek shared, “I followed my intuition with massage therapy.  It wasn’t a career that I thought about or sought out, but when I heard about it through two friends, I was intrigued. After two years in Health Studies at the University of Waterloo, I enrolled into Sutherland-Chan School and graduated in 1998. When I started out, I thought it would be a temporary gig.  But I couldn’t seem to let it go.  And as I evolved, expanded and deepened on a personal level, I started to see massage therapy as a vocation.”

Marcek describes her massage therapy style as restorative therapeutic relaxation, “I believe that a massage should feel good. Some people want deep tissue to work out the knots. I’d rather lure the tension out, instead of beating it up. I combine relaxation and deep tissue with my overall goal being to shift the nervous system from the stress response to the feel good healing response, then the body knows what to do,” she said.

For Health’s Sake

465 Queen Street West, 416-551-7100

Chloë Tudor and Katie White launched For Health’s Sake in 2018 at Queen and Spadina.

Tudor shared, “We saw that there was a missing piece in Toronto. Patients had the option to go to clinics that tend to be heavily focused on western therapies such as, Physiotherapy and Chiropractic care. On the other side of the spectrum, we had spa’s, where the focus is mostly Massage Therapy and relaxation. Our vision and inspiration was to add to that middle area.”

Tudor and White believe the atmosphere of a space impacts healing. “There is science showing that dimmer lights, relaxing music, essential oils, and comfy chairs can impact the nervous system. Additionally, we see the value of both eastern and western medicine and believe they work best when combined and collaborated, said Tudor.

Skip inside For Health’s Sake on Queen West and you’ll find 4 well-appointed treatment rooms. The lounge offers books, tarot cards, journals, Nespresso, lemon water, and soothing tea.

For Health’s Sake is an excellent spot to book massage therapy in Toronto, but it’s important to note the clinic offers a range of services including Psychotherapy, Physiotherapy, Chiropractic Care, Osteopathy, Registered Massage Therapy, Naturopath and Registered Acupuncture.

The RMT’s at For Health’s Sake focus on quality and targeted treatments. Tudor shared, “We have backgrounds in Kinesiology and therapeutic approaches. Each RMT has a thorough understanding of how the body works and what could be contributing to your pain.”

The massage menu also features Hot Stone Massage and The Siam, which offer a perfect combination of relaxation and targeted work.

For Health’s Sake also boasts a Leslieville location at 1238 Queen Street East.

Joe Ryan RMT Toronto

155 Lansdowne Ave, 647-968-6759

Looking for a more intimate and personalized Toronto RMT experience? Joe Ryan operates a spacious Toronto massage therapy studio at his home in Parkdale on Lansdowne Avenue.

Ryan first started doing massage therapy in Toronto in 2015, “I have always worked from my home clinic but also spent over 2 years working at three different clinics throughout Toronto. In October, 2017 I moved the practice to my home full time and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made!”

Ryan studied at Sutherland-Chan, “I have always had an interest in exercise, rehab, injuries, and science, probably due to my athletic past where I was constantly balancing injuries and training. Massage Therapy offered the ability to combine a lot of my interests in a self-employed field of study that helps people deal with their minds and bodies.”

Ryan’s clinic features 10 foot tall ceilings and is located in a historic 150 year old house on the main floor. Clients enjoy their RMT therapy in the buildings front room, which features a large window and comfy bench where Ryan consults before and after each treatment.

So what is Joe Ryan’s unique approach to massage therapy in Toronto?

“The aim is always therapeutic in whatever way is best suited to the needs of the person who shows up. A lot of the work I do is managing the stress or pain from people’s daily lives, like headaches, sports injuries, and stress, to get them back to what they need to do with more confidence and less pain. One of the most important aspects of my work is education, some people need to understand, for instance, posture and what it means before they can make meaningful changes to their routines to help with their issues.”
