What Is A Whiskey and Ginger Beer?
Ginger Beer and Whiskey is a classic cocktail combination that you can whip up in under a minute. And is it ever satisfying!
In an ice-filled highball glass use a bar spoon to muddle together your favourite whiskey, a few glugs of spicy Caribbean-style ginger beer and freshly squeezed lime juice. Garnish the glass with fresh herbs like basil or mint and you’re good to go!
Our classic recipe can be prepared with any of your favourite whiskies, from sweet Kentucky Bourbon to smoky Scotch. A very similar recipe for the Irish Mule however must be prepared only with Irish whiskey, like Bushmills or Jameson, in order to confidently serve it on Saint Patrick’s Day party!
Ingredients
This cocktail is made with fresh and premium ingredients:
- Whiskey: you can use your favourite Canadian Rye, Bourbon, Irish Whiskey or Scotch.
- Ginger Beer: use a Caribbean style non-alcoholic ginger beer such as Fever Tree or The Great Jamaican Ginger Beer Co.
- Simple Syrup: we prepare our own homemade simple syrup but you could add an additional ginger zing with Organic Ginger Syrup by The Ginger People.
- Lime Juice: we always suggest juicing fresh limes as you’ll taste the difference. Do not use store bought lime juice!
- Garnish: pluck fresh basil or mint from your garden or purchase a few sprigs at your grocery store or farmers market.
Recipe Directions
- Add whiskey and lime juice to a highball glass.
- Fill the glass with ice and top with ginger beer.
- Swirl and twirl with a long cocktail spoon.
- Garnish with fresh basil or mint.
Cocktail Tips
- This cocktail recipe is easy to make at home, ready to serve in under 10 minutes.
- We love serving this drink in the Spring and Summer. The refreshing whiskey cocktail is a crowd pleaser at garden parties, family barbecues and cottage cocktail hours.
- The recipe below serves one person. If you’re hosting a large gathering feel free to multiply the ingredients by the number of guests and muddle the drink in a punch bowl or jug rather than a cocktail shaker.
- If you’re hosting a party we suggest storing your whiskey bottles in the freezer 2-3 hours before guests arrive so the spirit is cold.
- If you don’t like the spicy flavour of ginger beer you can substitute with ginger ale to make an easy Whiskey and Ginger Ale.
- If you don’t have access to fresh basil feel free to substitute with mint.
- We like to serve the drink in a Collins or highball glass as it strikes the perfect alcohol and ginger beer balance. If you like a stronger drink feel free to add the lime and whiskey into a smaller rocks glass and top with sparkling ginger beer to the brim.
