What Is A Pimm’s Punch?

Pimm’s is an English brand of gin-based fruit cup, which is also considered a liqueur and the basis of a sling or punch cocktail.

It was first produced in 1823 by James Pimm, the owner of an oyster bar in London. He offered the tonic (a gin-based drink containing a secret mixture of herbs and liqueurs) as an aid to digestion, serving it in a small tankard known as a “No. 1 Cup”, hence its name.

The brands most popular product is Pimm’s No. 1 Cup, commonly used to make the Pimm’s Cup Cocktail. The drink is famously the signature sipper at the Wimbledon tennis tournament, with over 80,000 pints of Pimm’s cocktail sold to spectators.

Pimm’s is dark brown with a reddish tint, and an enticing taste of spice and citrus fruit. As a summer drink, it is normally served as a Pimm’s Cup, a drink with English-style lemonade (like Sprite or 7UP) as well as various chopped garnishes, such as apple, cucumber, orange, lemon, strawberry and mint.

Our Pimm’s Punch recipe is similar to a Pimm’s Cup, simply substituting fizzy lemonade soda with ginger ale.

Travel To England By Making A Pimm’s Punch At Home

I love traveling to Europe!

What I love most about traveling to the United Kingdom is the opportunity to sample unique dishes and drinks in each region and city. The dishes and drinks in London are unique to what you’d find in BelfastHampshireBrightonSouthamptonCardiffGlasgowEdinburghSkye or Islay.

While staying at the Four Seasons Hotel Hampshire, I had the opportunity to indulge in classic British culinary traditions like High Tea and Pimm’s Punch cocktail hour.

Before visiting Britain I had never heard of Pimm’s so was delighted to sip fruit and fresh herb muddled cocktails at award winning luxury hotels like Edinbane Lodge, The Balmoral and Llangoed Hall.

Once home from a British road trip you’ll love serving eye-popping glasses of Pimm’s Punch when company is coming.

Ingredients

This easy Pimm’s and Ginger Ale recipe is best made with fresh and premium ingredients.

  • Pimm’s: is the base spirit in this drink, giving the punch a cola-coloured hue.
  • Ginger Ale: is muddled into the drink to give it a sparkling mouthfeel and sharp ginger flavour. It also acts as a sweetener.
  • Chopped Fruits & Vegetables: there’s a reason some people joke this drink is a “boozy fruit salad.” A Pimm’s Punch is unique in that each glass is filled with chopped fruit and veggies. We like to use sliced cucumbers, lemon and strawberries.
  • Garnish: garnish each ice-filled Collins glass with a fresh mint sprig.

Pimm’s Ginger Ale Recipe Tips

  • We suggest serving this drink in a Collins glass but you can also use a large red wine glass or rocks glass.
  • This recipe serves one person. If you’re hosting a large gathering feel free to multiply the ingredients by the number of guests and muddle the drink in a festive punch bowl or jug.
  • If you want to make the drink a bit more boozy feel free to add an 1oz of your favourite gin or vodka.
  • You can level up this cocktail for a glamorous occasion by topping the drink with sparkling wine.
  • We like to use ginger ale in this recipe but if you like a spicer drink feel free to substitute with a Caribbean-style ginger beer the type used in a Moscow Mule.
  • An hour or two before you’re planning on serving drinks we suggest placing the Pimm’s bottle in your freezer so it’s well chilled.
  • We love muddling a Pimm’s and Ginger Ale with cucumber, strawberries and lemon but you can also add apple, orange and raspberries.
  • We like to garnish the drink with a fresh mint sprig but you can use other fresh herbs like basil.

Best Bartender Tools & Cocktail Equipment

Before hosting a swanky Pimm’s Punch soiree you’ll need to ensure you have the best bartender tools and cocktail equipment.

  • Cocktail Kit: cocktail kits are the perfect gift for newbie mixology fans as they include basic bartender tools like a jigger, shaker and spoon.
  • Cocktail Shaker: a bartender’s best friend. Purchase a premium cocktail shaker to muddle or shake up your favourite pink gin cocktails.
  • Cocktail Glassware: make sure your bar is stocked with a selection of unique glassware to show off your favourite cocktail creations.
  • Hawthorne Strainer: this unique strainer features tightly wound coils and perforated holes. It keeps ice and other large ingredients like lime wedges in your cocktail shaker rather than in the glass.
  • Bar Spoons: slender and long bar spoons are a must-have when stirring drinks.
  • Bottle Opener: easily open bottles of beer or cider with the flick of your wrist or purchase a corkscrew for fine wine.
  • Pouring Spout: once you’ve opened a new bottle of gin insert these affordable pourers to make cocktail assembly a breeze.
  • Cutting Board: purchase a petite cutting board for your bar to slice garnishes or citrus wedges like lime, orange, lemon or grapefruit.
  • Ice Bucket: chill bottles of gin quickly in an ice bucket or keep by the bar when muddling gin mixers into cool creations.
  • Ice Crusher: fans of the Mint Julep love an ice crusher.
  • Ice Cube Kit: we suggest purchasing a selection of ice cube trays. Silicone styles are our favourite as they’re easy to clean and are available in various shapes and sizes.
  • Jigger: use a jigger to accurately measure spirits, juices, syrups and shrubs.
  • Juicer: invest in an electronic juicer or buy an affordable hand-held to easily juice fresh citrus like lemons and limes.
  • Muddler: fans of the Mojito love a sturdy muddler to mix mint and lime. Muddler’s are handy for any cocktail featuring ingredients that need a pounding like fresh herbs or citrus wedges.
  • Citrus Peeler & Zester: adorn your craft cocktails with a thick citrus peel or finer ribbons of lime or lemon zest.
  • Rimmer: Bloody Mary and Caesar lovers should outfit their bar with a handy rimmer for salting and sugaring glassware.
