How To Make Maroulosalata Greek Lettuce Salad
The name maroulosalata is literally Greek for “lettuce salad” (marouli = lettuce, salata = salad). It’s a dish so straightforward in name that you instantly know what’s inside.
Unlike horiatiki (Greek village salad), maroulosalata is not ancient, it became popular in Greece in the 20th century, when lettuce varieties like romaine became more common thanks to modern agriculture.
In Greece, maroulosalata is especially popular in spring and early summer, when lettuce is tender and sweet. It often appears on Easter tables alongside roast lamb.
The classic dressing is just extra-virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar or lemon juice, salt, and pepper, letting the freshness of the greens shine. Authentic recipes almost always include fresh dill and green onions for brightness. Some regions also add parsley or mint for extra fragrance.
In Greece, maroulosalata is typically served alongside grilled meats, fish, or vegetarian mains. It’s the perfect palate cleanser and a crunchy counterpoint to rich and fatty comfort food dishes.
The simplest Greek Lettuce Salad recipes simply feature chopped lettuce, herbs, scallions and the lemony dressing. If you’re keen on enjoying this salad as a main course for lunch we suggest topping it with crumbled feta cheese and sliced olives.
