The Westin Hotel in Calgary

I recently enjoyed a trip to Alberta which would have me racing through cosmopolitan Calgary and beautiful Banff on a short weekend away. My home sweet home in the city was the Westin Calgary, a perfectly situated hotel located within walking distance to the city’s top sights.

This would be my first travel experience with Westin, a hotel brand focussed on the well-being of its guests. Westin’s signature well-being program makes eating, sleeping, working and playing on the road a breeze. Health conscious guests will love SuperFoodsRx (a menu packed with thoughtful options), the RunWESTIN program (local running maps and New Balance fitness gear lending) and the Westin’s award-winning Heavenly Bed.

The Westin Hotel in Calgary

The Westin Calgary is most famous for having been the birth place of Canada’s national cocktail, The Caesar, which was invented in 1969 by the hotel’s bar manager Walter Chell. After being asked to create a signature drink that would pair perfectly with the tomatoes and clams that adorned the hotel’s new Italian restaurant menu, Chell created a savoury meets spicy cocktail now popular across Canada.

Legend has it that an Englishman walked into the restaurant, and after sampling the new creation exclaimed, “Walter, that’s a fantastic bloody Caesar!” And so Walter called it the Bloody Caesar. Today the Caesar is Canada’s favourite cocktail, with an estimated 220 million enjoyed across the country each year.

History buffs with a penchant for vodka be sure to skip through the Westin Calgary’s lobby and plop yourself down at Liquid Lounge to enjoy a unique table-side Caesar experience.

Known as the premier brand truly committed to helping guests get a good night’s sleep, Westin has introduced a complimentary Sleep Well Lavender Balm bedside amenity, infused with the calming essential oils of lavender and chamomile. This is the latest in a series of sleep offerings that promise a better slumber for travelers.

The Westin Calgary’s Executive Junior Suites, located in the corners of the building, provide a private, oversized retreat with luxurious amenities, spectacular river or city views and large balconies. The spacious space features Westin’s iconic Heavenly Bed, a separate seating area with a large 42 inch flat screen television, coffee table, arm chair and sofa.

If you’re keen to treat yourself to a moment of rest and relaxation but are crunched for time the Westin Calgary offers an in-room spa menu featuring traditional Swedish massages, Eastern energy therapy, pressure point foot massages, pedicures, manicures, scrubs and facials.

Before your treatment one of the hotel’s friendly attendants creates a relaxing spa atmosphere by offering up a basket which holds a flower, healthful treat, bottle of water and a letter with recommendations on how to make the most of your in-room spa experience. The basket also contains a spa music CD to be played before and during your treatment as well as a selection of plant based aromatherapy oils and room sprays allowing you to choose your own scent before you hit the bed for a serious snooze.
