Guacamole, The World’s Favourite Dip!
Guacamole is a traditional Mexican avocado dip that dates back to the Aztecs, who were making a version of this dish as early as the 1500s. In Nahuatl, the Aztec language, ahuacamolli translates to “avocado sauce.”
The original recipe was perfectly simple, avocados mashed with salt and sometimes tomatoes or chilies. Over centuries, it evolved across Mexico and later the United States, becoming a staple in Mexican cuisine, Tex-Mex cooking, and global food culture.
Today, guacamole is beloved worldwide for its creamy texture, fresh flavour, and versatility. Whether served with tacos, tortilla chips, or grilled meats, it remains a symbol of fresh, vibrant Mexican cooking.

How To Tell If Avocado Is Ripe
- Gentle squeeze test: Hold the avocado in your palm and gently squeeze (don’t use fingertips, or you’ll bruise it). A ripe avocado should yield slightly to pressure but not feel mushy.
- Colour check: Most avocados turn a dark green to almost black when ripe. If it’s still bright green, it’s likely not ready yet.
- Stem check: Flick off the small stem at the top. If it comes off easily and you see green underneath, the avocado is ripe. If it’s brown underneath, it may be overripe.
- Texture observation: Avoid avocados with large indentations or overly soft spots, they can be mushy or spoiled inside.
- Plan ahead: If your avocado is slightly underripe but you need it soon, store it in a paper bag with a banana or apple; the ethylene gas will speed up ripening.

How to Make Quick & Easy Guacamole
Follow these easy steps for perfect results:
- Prep the Avocados: Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a medium mixing bowl.
- Mash: Use a fork to mash the avocados to your preferred consistency—smooth or chunky.
- Add Fresh Ingredients: Stir in the tomato, white onion, cilantro, and jalapeño.
- Season: Add lime juice, salt, and pepper. Mix until everything is combined.
- Taste and Adjust: Add more lime juice for brightness, jalapeño for heat, or salt for depth.

Guacamole Recipe Tips
- Use very ripe avocados: they should give slightly when gently squeezed.
- Add lime generously: the acid boosts flavour and helps prevent browning of the avocado.
- Dice ingredients finely for the best texture.
- Don’t overmix if you like chunky guac.
- Remove tomato seeds to keep your guacamole from becoming watery.
- Get flavour creative by adding grated garlic, crumbled cotija cheese or finely chopped mango or pineapple.

How To Store Guacamole
Guacamole oxidizes quickly, but these tricks help keep it bright green:
- Press plastic wrap directly on the surface of the guacamole.
- Some people swear by adding a thin layer of water on top. It works surprisingly well, just pour it off before serving.
- Add an extra splash of lime on top before covering.
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
