Planning a trip to Thailand and looking to stay at a truly unique, might we even say magical, resort that will blow your design-loving socks off?

Thanks to the imagination of award-winning designer Bill Bensley, InterContinental Khao Yai Resort stands out as one of the most playful and posh resorts in all of South East Asia.

Bensley spent years collecting abandoned train carriages in Thailand and up-cycled them into accommodation suites, villas, restaurants, bars, a spa and even a kids club (complete with a cute bunny pen).

It's "all aboard" at the train themed 5 star resort InterContinental Khao Yai in Thailand.

Upon arrival guests are welcomed by a train ticket master.  It is a ritual for guests to ring the bell at the lobby entrance. This signifies they are onboard the train and ready for their journey to begin!

Bensley’s was inspired to design the resort once he explored the history of the region’s rail transportation to northeast Thailand during King Rama V’s reign.

Nestled within a lush tropical landscape InterContinental Khao Yai Resort offers the attentive service you’d expect at a 5 star hotel but with a boutique vibe. The resort has 64 luxury rooms and suites and repurposed heritage railcars suites and villas.

The resort is located in the heart of Khao Yai National Park, which is part of a UNESCO world heritage site. It’s a popular countryside weekend getaway for those living in Bangkok. There are also several world class golf resorts in the area, hiking and biking trails, waterfalls, and most surprising, hillside winery estates!

Khao Yai Experiences

Khao Yai National Park was established in 1962 as Thailand’s first national park. It remains one of the largest, and includes more than 2,200 sq km of mountainous rainforest. The park is one of 5 which comprise the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex UNESCO heritage site.

The surrounding region is surprisingly diverse, offering plenty of holiday fun for romantic couples or adventure-seeking families.

The concierge at the hotel can organize plenty of fun experiences to visit Khao Yai’s gems. Due to the region’s beautiful nature reserve cycling and hiking are a popular pastime for locals and visitors alike.

Art fans will find happiness paying visits to Khao Yai Art Museum, 129 Art Museum and Prammika Art Gallery, uniquely located adjacent to a modern Thai Catholic Cathedral.

If spirituality is of interest be sure to pay a visit to Phu Hai Long Temple, which features an oversized fat golden Buddha.

Wine lovers like me will be shocked to discover that vinis vinifera grapes are growing well in the cool hills here. Skip through scenic vineyards at GranMonte Winery and Alcidini to sip Khao Yai’s unique terroir. Popular varieties include shiraz, viognier and chenin blanc.

If you’re a fan of golf the region boasts a handful of world-class courses including Rancho Charnvee, Toscana Valley, Mission Hills and Karimaya.

Thrill seekers looking to get outdoors can enjoy canyoning, ATVing, zipling, and white water rafting. For a more relaxed nature experience enjoy a soak at Ban Tha Chang’s natural spring.
