Fun Things To Do In Kathmandu

We suggest spending at least 3 nights in Kathmandu, so you have time to enjoy the hotel as well as explore the top sites in the Nepali capital.

I enjoyed a full day tour with a local guide from Nebuti Travels, which I recommend hiring if you’re looking to visit many of the city’s top attractions as an air conditioned car and knowledgeable guide make all the difference when zig-zagging through Kathmandu’s wild traffic!

  • Thamel: is a must-visit neighbourhood in Kathmandu famous for its nightlife, backpacker accommodations, outfitter stores popular for hikers and lively cafes and restaurants. You’ll also find lots of shopping opportunity to buy souvenirs and pashmina fashions.
  • Durbar Square: is a historically and culturally significant site in Kathmandu, one of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The outer complex consists of a number of 16th-century temples built during the reign of the Malla kings. These buildings are adorned with meticulously carved facades characteristic of Newar architecture. The central square is surrounded by palace complexes built during the Malla and Shah periods.
  • Pashupatinath Temple: is a Hindu temple dedicated to Pashupati, a form of Shiva. It is located in Kathmandu near the Bagmati River. The temple was classified as a World Heritage Site in 1979. This extensive Hindu temple precinct is a sprawling collection of temples, ashrams, images and inscriptions. The must-visit attraction is one of seven monument groups in UNESCO’s designation of Kathmandu Valley.
  • Bouddhanath: Boudha Stupa is a stupa and major spiritual landmark seen as the embodiment of the enlightened mind of all the Buddhas. Built in the northeast of Kathmandu Valley in a Tamang village surrounded by rice paddies, the stupa gave birth to the origins of Tibetan Buddhism. It is filled with consecrated substances, and its massive mandala makes it the largest spherical stupa in Nepal and one of the largest in the world.
  • Swayambhunath: is an ancient religious complex atop a hill in the Kathmandu Valley. The Tibetan name for the site means ‘Sublime Trees’, for the many varieties of trees found on the hill. It is the most sacred among Buddhist pilgrimage sites. For followers of Tibetan Buddhism, it is second only to Boudha.
  • Patan: Patan Durbar Square is situated at the centre of the city of Lalitpur. One of its attractions is the medieval royal palace where the Malla Kings of Lalitpur resided. A marvel of Newar architecture, the square floor is tiled with red bricks. Due to the tragedy of the 2015 earthquake Kathmandu Durbar Square was heavily damaged so today the Patan Durbar Square is considered to be in better condition.
