The city’s name actually comes from the Old High German term Munichen, meaning “by the monks.” From its medieval roots, Munich grew to become the capital of the Kingdom of Bavaria in the 19th century—a legacy still evident in its regal architecture, grand avenues, and enduring royal charm.
