At 649 Yonge Street sits a little Indian hole in the wall restaurant called Kothur. I had heard good things about their food so hopped into the spot to make a lengthy take out order. The music was corny and borderline irritating Indian Bollywood tunes. The walls were covered in tacky and cheap art pieces. After taking my order I was told it would take 45 minutes to prepare so sat down at an empty dining room table and observed the room. It because evident very quickly that the restaurant is understaffed. Diners sat irritably waiting to get their bills or have their plates removed…one group of Indian men actually got up from their table (finishing up their Lassi’s) and told the waiter they had to leave as they couldn’t wait this long for their food.
So this place is not exactly where you come to enjoy ambiance or stellar service but the food is authentic and all curries consisted of big chunks of white chicken meat or beef. I would return here for take out only if I called in my order in advance. Waiting around isn’t my thing, and staring at pained diners is not the cherry to my dessert.
Sambar Vada: fried lentil donuts dipped in sambar
Onion Bhajia: deep fried crispy onion fritters coated with besan flour
Vegetable Samosa: crispy patties stuffed with potatoes and peas.
Dhal Makhini: boiled whole black lentils simmered in onion, tomato sauce and Indian spices.
Butter Chicken: tandoori chicken simmered in rich creamy tomato sauce.
Chicken Kurma: chicken cooked with nuts and cream sauce.
Beef Rogan Josh: beef cooked with traditional Kashmiri spices with tomatoes and yogurt.
Chicken Biriyani: chicken cooked with basmati rice, mint leaves, yogurt and ground spices.
