The first Fiac castle was built in the 12th century, serving as a fortified “city,” which is now the location of Place du Château d’Eau. The current Château de Fiac was constructed in the 19th century. Commissioned by the Rivals family, it is situated a short distance from the original castle, just outside of the village.

Chateau de Fiac was recently renovated between 2019-2022 by Hong Kong-based architect Alexis Dupont. It opened its doors as a luxury boutique hotel by The Pavilions in June, 2022.

Design lovers will be giddy strolling through the boutique hotel’s eye-popping interiors. Inspired by the cultural heritage of the castle, the collection of works of art, sculptures, paintings, collages and objects takes visitors into an inspirational narrative setting, which showcases a link between the contemporary and historical.

While strolling through the corridors of the hotel, management came across a unique piece by Victor Cadène as well as a collection of 400 forest paintings on the way up the stairs. The living room also boasts a gigantic wall fresco by Galatea Martin.

Accommodation

The most important question you have to ask yourself when reading a Chateau de Fiac review is, “what type of accommodation would I like to book for my holiday.”

Across the château’s three stories, guests can explore 10 rooms and 6 suites, which include a swoon-worthy rooftop pied-à-terre.

During our tour of the property we noticed each room was decorated in pretty ceramics that had been sourced from the four corners of France as well as old paintings, mixed with contemporary abstract screen prints.

Suite bathrooms feature soaker tubs and stand alone rain showers.

Room interiors offer a relaxed colour palette, decorated in tones that match the chateau’s natural surroundings; from rich terracottas to woodsy greens and bright white linens.

Chic white-tiled bathrooms boast free-standing baths, plenty of natural light, plush bathrobes and slippers and luxurious amenities by ALGOTHERM. In the bedroom you’ll find oversized beds wrapped in plush duvets, gilded fan lights, Nespresso nook, HDTV and minibar.

REVIVO SPA

Chateau de Fiac is perhaps best known as a wellness resort, the perfect place to spend a few days in Southern France to rest and relax.

Since The Pavilions has a number of properties in Asia, including the brands flagship The Pavilions Phuket, which we visited in 2023, it’s no surprise Chateau de Fiac’s spa showcases the unique healing rituals of Bali.

Located on the garden level of the chateau, guests are encouraged to discover a tranquil space dedicated to well-being, which you can access directly in your bathrobe from your room.

Chateau de Fiac's spa features a Swedish sauna with a window overlooking the garden.

Dubbed the Balneotherapy Area, hotel guests enjoy free access to an aquatic space equipped with an indoor swimming pool, Icelandic baths, sauna and hammam. The hotel also features a refreshing outdoor pool, lined in comfy loungers perfect for a lazy day.

The spa features 5 treatment rooms, one of which accommodates couples. Enjoy a wellness weekend by booking a soothing service such as a massage, facial, invigorating scrubs and seaweed wraps.

The spa’s signature treatments by Thalgo Marine Beauty are 2 hours in length: Arctic Wonder (featuring a water bubble relaxer) and Pacific Islands (relaxing in warm sand ballotins).

The hotel's subterranean spa offers massages, body wraps and facials.

Since I’m such a big fan of massage I was really impressed to see a long list of modalities to chose from: Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, Balinese, Ayurvedic, Californian, Swedish, and Tibetan Singing Bowl.

If you’re looking to polish and plump your face the menu features extensive facial treatment options, from a Marine Peel to Soin Silicon Lift and Hyalu-Pro-Collagen Filler.

The spa at Chateau de Fiac is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 7pm.

Renaissance Restaurant

No review of The Pavilions Chateau de Fiac is complete until you’ve had an opportunity to wag your finger down the hotel’s marvellous menus.

The kitchen at Renaissance Restaurant is managed by Chef John Courtis, who originally studied the culinary arts in England and now finds himself playing with French flavours at Fiac’s best restaurant.

Chef John honed his craft at two consecutive Michelin-starred restaurants then in 2015 launched Chez John, swiftly earning the prestigious Bib Gourmand recognition.

Wag your finger down the dinner menu and you’ll find the provenance of locally sourced products. The foie gras and duck from Sud Ouest de la France, fish from Issus de la Peche Francase and beef sourced in Aubrac.

Diners can select from two menus depending on how peckish they are feeling. On the Renaissance Menu guests can select from two appetizers, entrees, and desserts with a cheese course in between.

Guests can order a midafternoon cocktail or pre-dinner aperitif at the hotel's bar.

The Gastronomique Menu is perfect for traveling foodies, featuring an appetizer, fish, entree, cheese course, and dessert. During our visit menu highlights included the chef’s signature duck foie gras, beef fillet with potato millefeuilles, Brie de Meaux (the creamy cheese stuffed with a blend of black truffle and dried figs), and langoustine served with white asparagus and mango.

The menu is perfectly paired with an extensive wine list that showcases prized bottles from nearby Gaillac, Languedoc and beyond.

Between May and October a pianist serenades diners every Friday night at the restaurant.

Breakfast each morning is served as a plentiful buffet. Once seated your server asks for your coffee preference (a cappuccino or Americano depending on my mood).

The buffet features a selection of yogurts, homemade granola, fruit salad, cereals, smoked salmon, charcuterie, French cheeses, DIY egg station, bacon and sausages, sweet cakes, baguette, croissants, and fresh juices.

Things To Do Near Chateau de Fiac

We spent 4 nights at Chateau de Fiac, which is located in the heart of South Western France’s scenic Occitanie region.

I suggest dedicating a full day of your itinerary at the hotel so you can rest and relax at the spa, enjoy a cocktail by the outdoor pool and indulge in a fancy French feast at Renaissance Restaurant.

I recommend planning additional days to road trip through some of Occitanie’s most popular destinations by visiting nearby Tarn and Toulouse.

  • Albi: this UNESCO world heritage city is the home of famous Moulin Rouge loving artist Lautrec (who has a museum dedicated to his work). Enjoy a walking tour of the old town with stops at Sainte-Cecile Cathedral, the gardens of the Palais de la Berbie, St-Salvy Cloister and the bustling covered market. Stop for lunch or dinner at Au Hibou, which offers daily menus on chalkboards and an excellent craft beer menu.
  • Cordes sur Ciel: is an ancient Medieval walled city that will take your breath away (thanks to it’s jaw dropping scenery and steep roads). The village appears perched in the sky, featuring numerous historic gates and fortifications. On a walking tour you’ll find plenty of local art galleries, chocolatiers, gourmet shops selling everything from cassoulet in a jar to tinned duck rillettes, a lively market square, bustling bistro patios and a charming church. Be sure to sample the city’s famous Medieval recipe, crunchy wafer-thin cookies made with sugar, egg white and almonds, called Croquants de Cordes.
  • Vins de Gaillac: if you’re a wine lover on a road trip of Occitanie be sure to stop in Gaillac, which is home to over 100 vineyards. If you’re tight on time stop by Vins de Gaillac at St Michel Abbey and hop up on a bar stool to enjoy a tasting of local wines. The tasting room boasts a retail shop so you can you take back a bottle or two to the hotel to swirl and sip in you suite.
  • Toulouse: the region’s capital, known as the Pink City due to the use of local bricks in its construction, boasts cosmopolitan flare paired with ancient architecture and surprising number of modern museums that highlight its celebrity in the global aerospace industry. On a walking tour of the old town be sure to stop in and visit Basilique Saint-Sernin, Capitole, Couvent des Jacobins, as well as the Marché Victor Hugo, France’s biggest covered market. Enjoy lunch or dinner on the scenic rooftop patio at Ma Biche Sur Le Toit. Aeroscopia is Toulouse’s must-visit aviation museum, located directly beside the Airbus Factory, which features over 30 legendary aircraft. Due to the city’s large population of engineers Toulouse is also the epicentre of Europe’s space program, which can be explored at the impressive Cité de L’espace.
