I visited The Grange of Prince Edward County Winery during my Prince Edward County FORD Foodie Road Trip.
The Grange of Prince Edward County is a small estate winery in Prince Edward County near Wellington. The winery is a family-run agribusiness established on an over-600-acre family farm purchased in the early 70s by the Granger family.
When we arrived at the farm we were greeted by the CEO and President Caroline Granger who spent the next hour or so giving us a tour of the winery and cellars. My companions and I agreed that Caroline was our favourite story teller out of all of the wineries we visited during our tour. She was filled with enthusiasm for the history of the property and is clearly passionate about her product. Her love for wine making clearly shines through the many samples we tried with her in the tasting room.
Caroline began the vineyard project in 1999 with a simple plan for 10 acres of vines. After a year of field preparation, she planted the first block on Victoria Day, 2001, with Chardonnay, Gamay and Pinot Noir grapes. She chose to start with these varietals because they perfectly suit both the calcium-based limestone in our clay-gravel soil and the region’s shortened growing season. Today, with 60 acres under vine, the farm is home to 6 distinct vineyard blocks; plantings include Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, and enough Pinot Noir to make it one of the larger vineyards in Canada.
