Brunch at Cafe Savoy in Prague

After spending a sunny morning on a guided city tour of Prague we skipped down steep steps from the cities famed castle in search of a hearty lunch. With much enthusiasm we marched into Cafe Savoy, smacking our lips and licking our chops. We would be enjoying a late lunch at 2pm, it was clear the entire table was famished and ready to indulge in a fine feast. I plopped myself down on a comfy bench with a sigh, sitting under a wall decked out in wine bottles. Flipping my finger through the menu: giddy, gleeful, gluttonous…

Savoy evokes the atmosphere of the cafes made popular during the first Czechoslovak Republic. It’s remarkable interior is dominated by a Neo-Renaissance ceiling dating back to 1893 and the twinkle of chandelier decadence.

The dining room hustle and bustled. Cafe Savoy is where the well-t0-do crowd come to see and be seen while sip and nibbling their way through the cities best brunch offerings. I started the meal off with a pint of frothy Pilsner Urquell and spent the next two hours fighting off a food coma.

Moments after we placed our orders an army of waiters dropped steaming bowls under our noses. One glance at our collective a la carte feast and I burst out laughing. Each of my companions tried their best to fit the two or three dishes they ordered into a tabletop puzzle. Highlights of the menu included lentil soup with roasted sausage, baked ham brioche with gruyere topped poached egg and pork schnitzel with potato salad speckled with sweet gherkin. First time visitors to Prague should be sure to order The Carnivores Delight, aka The Plate Savoy (nodding to David Ort for his epic order) which features a towering plate of prague ham, frankfurter, merquezi, cabbage, buttered potatoes and spicy mustard.
