Bairro do Avillez Portuguese Restaurant in Lisbon

Food fans looking to enjoy an unforgettable dining experience in Lisbon should be sure to book an evening at celebrated Chef Jose Avillez’ magical multi-restaurant concept Barrio do Avillez. Located in the the city’s Chiado neighbourhood, the massive awe-inspiring venue is the celebrated chef’s most sensational space.

Considered to be Portugal’s most celebrated chef, Chef Jose Avillez is credited for promoting Portuguese gastronomy and putting Lisbon on Europe’s culinary map. The chef’s restaurant group currently manages eleven concepts in Lisbon and Porto, offering a variety of options: from fine dining at Belcanto, awarded two Michelin stars and ranked as one of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, to Beco – Cabaret Gourmet, an entertaining bohemian space inspired by bars from the 1920’s.

At Bario do Avillez you’ll find a Mercearia (gourmet deli) stocked with Portuguese delicacies, a wonderful Taberna (tavern) for those keen to share hearty tapas, a pretty Pateo (specializing in serious seafood), and Cantina Peruana (Chef Diego Munoz’s take on contemporary Peruvian cuisine). Avillez’ inspiring culinary complex is open everyday from noon to midnight. Drop in during a mid-afternoon heat wave for a sip and nibble and you’ll avoid the lunch and dinner crowds.

During my visit I dined at Taberna, a boisterous Portuguese tapas concept featuring fresh flavours and pretty plates perfect for sharing. Wag your finger down the menu and you’ll find a stellar selection of local wines by the glass, hoppy craft beer bottles, and an inspiring thirst-quenching selection of craft cocktails. On the savoury side of things you’ll find the city’s best beef croquettes, a wild selection of seafood, and serious steaks.
