I made it just in time! My goal all summer had been to make a day out of enjoying Toronto’s west end. I enjoyed an absolutely unforgettable afternoon with my friend Malcolm. We hopped on bikes and zoomed across College and down Bathurst to Trinity Bellwoods Park. We spent the early afternoon lazing under a tree while sipping on Sapporo. After having now traveled to almost 60 countries I have spent many an afternoon sipping on beer in public parks. Toronto simply adores Trinity Bellwoods: the space was filled with pot smoking hipsters, jogging baby boomers and attractive topless men who spent their free time throwing frisbees and balls for my entertainment.
I joked about how I would love to create a Bavarian Munich style beer hall in the centre of Trinity Bellwoods. How fantastic would that be? Huge pretzels, massive steins, pork hoc sweetness and overwhelmingly large sausages. I imagine live music: French “Ma Vie En Rose” on Saturday afternoons while hippies dance with flowers in their hair and evenings infused with polka and good cheer. Why can’t food and drink be part of the park experience Toronto?
Right now, the alternative is a hop skip and a jump from the park at Bellwoods Brewery, a craft beer paradise and popular Ossington restaurant. I had heard a ton about this spot since it opened and had made a promise to myself that I would visit the establishment before the summers end. I had heard loads from other food writers and Toronto beer and foodie fans. Most commented on their love for the glorious sun drenched patio, smiling service and brilliant beers which are crafted on site. Several had noted that the brewery fell short in the kitchen but wanted to check it out for myself.
We arrived around 4pm and grabbed a seat at a table in front of the bar. We both enjoyed two ice cold Belgian Wit’s which they refer to as their White Picket Fence. Malcolm ordered the oysters which he found too fishy. We both ordered a plate of bbq corn and pork sausage which we both found a bit bland.
While I won’t be running back for their eats, Bellwoods Brewery offers up a fantastic Day Drunk destination for West Enders.
