Things to Do in Langkawi

Set in the heart of an archipelago of some 100 islands and islets in the Andaman Sea, Pulau Langkawi is one of  Malaysia’s most popular destinations. Fringed with sandy beaches and forested hills in the interior, a number of idyllic resorts and spas offer soothing retreats, while a range of sporting activities such as diving and trekking attract adventurous visitors.

In the 1980s, Langkawi was transformed from an isolated, overwhelmingly rural area, into a duty-free zone in a successful attempt to make it a holiday destination. Today, the island booms as a popular retreat for overworked urbanites from Kuala Lumpur, is a popular stop on Southeast Asian cruise itineraries and a must-see for luxury travellers looking to rest and relax at jaw-dropping properties from by Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton and St Regis.

While you could easily spend your entire vacation relaxing at your resort, Langkawi offers plenty of unique attractions worthy of a road trip.

Things to Do in Langkawi

Seven Wells Waterfall

Known locally as Telaga Tujuh, Seven Wells Waterfall gets its name from the seven natural pools that have been formed at different levels by water streams that flow down the second highest mountain of Langkawi – Mount Mat Cincang. It’s the most picturesque waterfall on the island and access to the site is a gentle 20 minute hike from the parking lot.

Langkawi Sky Bridge

Completed in 2005, Langkawi Sky Bridge is a 125-metre curved pedestrian cable-stayed bridge located 660 metres above sea level at the peak of Gunung Mat Chinchang. The adventure begins on a glass-bottomed gondola which soars above lush rainforest. Disembark at the top station and hop on the SkyGlide (an inclined lift) which transports you to the bridge entrance. While strolling along the Sky Bridge on a sunny day it really feels as though you are floating over mountain peaks and the views truly are mesmerizing.

Langkawi Night Market

The island’s most famous culinary experience is the bustling Langkawi Night Market. The location of the market changes each day of the week allowing vendors to serve fresh street food to communities throughout the island. Many vendors and villagers set up makeshift stalls at these markets and sell all kinds of local items including food & snacks, fresh produce and freshly squeezed juices.
Langkawi’s Night Market is the best way to sample various types of local Malay food at cheap prices. Local faves include grilled seafood, chicken or beef satay, murtabak, green mango salad, lemon grass chicken on sticks, crispy fried chicken and steaming wok’s filled with fried noodles.

Kilim Karst Geoforest Park

The UNESCO-protected coastline of Langkawi holds the key to 550-million-years-worth of natural heritage – the vast majority of which remains unseen by visitors. One of the island’s most popular excursions is a boat cruise through Langkawi’s famous Kilim Karst Geoforest Park. A nature lovers dream, this biodiverse mangrove is home to majestic eagles, mischievous macaques, fish that ‘walk’, colourful tree-climbing crabs, shy otters and snoozing bats.

Four Seasons Langkawi Geo Spa

If you’re looking to enjoy a moment of rest and relaxation book yourself an afternoon at Four Seasons Langkawi’s Geo Spa. The award winning wellness centre distils the ancient energies of Langkawi’s UNESCO Geopark into bespoke natural treatments. Amid six ‘floating’ spa pavilions flanked by towering limestone cliffs, the dramatic spa complex draws on an abundance of natural resources long revered by Langkawians for their healing benefits.

Local natural treasures used in the treatments include: kacip fatimah – a herb renowned for women’s health – sustainably harvested from the Kuala Kangsar Rainforest; tongkat ali, used throughout Malaysia for generations to increase male sexual desire and libido; therapeutic essential oils such as mawar (the oil of love), bunga limau (bliss) and bungar melur (for stimulating the flow of love); and homemade herb and spice poultices featuring bunga chengkih, kayu manis and buah pelage.
