Comedy Clubs in Toronto

Andrew Johnston is a veteran Canadian LGBTQ stand-up comic. He’s clocked multiple appearances at Montreal’s Just For Laugh’s Festival, San Francisco’s Sketch Comedy Festival and held court for several years as one of the regulars on MuchMusic’s top rated series Video On Trial. Andrew released his debut comedy album White Devil in 2014, which was followed up in 2018 by the even more uproarious *Sips Tea*.

In 2006 Andrew started familiarizing himself with comedy clubs in Toronto. But he says it was a decade ago, when Comedy Bar first opened, that everything changed in the city.

“There were fleeting venues, many of which are buried under condo’s now, that one-off sketch, improv and stand-up shows happened at, but Comedy Bar was finally a designated venue where all these disciplines intertwined. That has literally been the game-changer in terms of comedy in this city in a broader context, and the catalyst for diversity within comedy in this city ever since. Gone were the traditional gatekeepers who decided what comedy should or could be, and anyone with a dream and dollar could put on the show of their wildest dreams as long as they could account for at least 20 paying audience members.”

Diverse Voices and Venues

With so many comedy clubs and bars with regular weekly comedy programming to LOL in Toronto, we asked our local pro to clarify the differences.

“Comedians would classify a comedy club as a designated comedy venue. Yuk Yuk’s Toronto, Absolute Comedy Toronto, The Underground Cafe, somewhere that there are tables ranging in cabaret to cafeteria style seating and a small stage with a light focused on it and a mic-stand and, if you’re lucky, a stool. Sketch or Improv couldn’t happen there, and that’s probably the point. It’s not a theatrical space, it’s a stand-up comedy space.

And I feel for a lot of Toronto comedians, they might use comedy club as a pejorative, as in that’s hacky, limited or traditional. There are a lot of trappings that go along with the term comedy club. Like, “how’s everyone doing tonight? Anyone from out of town? Any couples here tonight?” Things like that, that would make a Toronto comedy connoisseur groan.

Make no mistake, the willingness of Toronto’s bars with both found and established performance spaces who have taken a chance on a weekday night to allow comedy shows within them have contributed as much to Toronto’s rich comedy scene as the comedians have.

The one that comes to mind for me is Queer & Present Danger Open Mic on Monday at Pegasus. It’s an entirely queer comedy open mic that has fostered an LGBT comedy scene that I never thought would be possible, but it is packed with fans every week!”

Second City Toronto

Second City Toronto is the city’s most well known comedy club. It’s where many of Canada’s most celebrated comedians nurtured their talent before making it big. The walls inside Second City Toronto are decorated in vintage photos featuring popular cast members of the past. You’ll find signed portraits of Mike Myers, Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, Martin Short, Gilda Radner, Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara.

Second City Toronto’s most popular performances take place in the mainstage theatre. The impressive space offers a total of 300 seats, making it one of biggest comedy clubs in Toronto. The John Candy Box is a more intimate theatre housed within the Second City Training Centre. The smaller theatre has 70 seats and is home to the training centre’s class shows as well as everyday private rentals.

Every night of the week the mainstage theatre cast performs a free improv set after the last show of the evening. This could run 25 minutes to an hour depending on the night. This happens Sunday to Thursday at around 9:45pm and on Friday/Saturdays at 11:45pm. Any night of the week anyone can walk in off the street and watch Canada’s best improv actors perform for free!

Yuk Yuk’s Toronto

Yuk Yuk’s is Canada’s national stand-up comedy company, with 17 clubs from coast to coast. Yuk Yuk’s Toronto got its start in the Spring of 1976. Co-founder Joel Axler explains, “It was a time when disco hits climbed the charts and fended off light rock to hold mighty positions; a time when Hollywood films turned moody, even black with introspection.

Yuk Yuk’s Toronto sprang from Harbourfront Open Evenings in a time when poetry, native songs, folk and experimental jazz all shared a facet in a mosaic of the city’s mid-70’s cry for meaning and edge. There was an ocean of government money for esoteric expression! The CN Tower had just been erected and put a “Tower of Babel” phallus on the skyline. Many of the hidden polite savages with renegade sentiments were finally bleeping into the city’s radar, and our desperate need to mock everything in exchange for the public’s hilarity and fun clinched the deal.”

Comedy clubs in Toronto weren’t yet a recognized industry back then. The founders at Yuk Yuk’s Toronto gathered a half dozen of their funny friends and launched a weekly Wednesday open stage in a basement hall at The 519 in the heart of Church and Wellesley’s Gay Village.

Today, Yuk Yuk’s Toronto is located in the heart of the Entertainment District. Open mic comedy shows take place every Tuesday and Pro Am shows are Wednesday nights. Yuk Yuk’s Toronto All Black Comedy Show happens on the last Sunday of every month.

Nothing Fancy opened its doors in Kensington Market in the summer of 2022.

Nothing Fancy first opened on Dundas Street West during Summer 2020, running shows on a back patio during the pandemic. Since then it has emerged as one of Toronto’s hottest new comedy stages.

Nothing Fancy is operated by owner Alberto Richards, general manager Zoe Rumney, and comedy coordinator Bria Hiebert. The venue provides a comfortable and professional environment for both audiences and performers of all levels.

Nothing Fancy programs their own shows, where all spots are paid spots, but also offers space to self producing comedians. Toronto’s newest comedy club hopes to create a model that aids in creating a cultural shift within the comedy community.

On the main floor of Nothing Fancy is a bar area and Tito’s Barbecue Cookout, with a patio outback. The comedy venue is in the basement level and outfitted with a bar serving beer, cider and cocktails in a can. They also have a nice selection of munchies like chips, candy and chocolate.

Social Capital Theatre

Social Capital Theatre is located on the Danforth in the heart of Toronto’s Greek Town. Affectionately referred to as SoCap by regulars, the performing arts bar first opened in 2014. The double decker space offers the most dive bar vibe of our fave comedy clubs in Toronto. The mainstage on the second floor seats 88, while the intimate third floor cabaret has a capacity of 33.

SoCap is brought to you by owners Ralph MacLeod and Carmine Lucarelli. The duo specialize in improv comedy but on SoCap’s two stages you can enjoy stand up, sketch, plays, burlesque, and spoken word.

During the week, Social Capital Theatre’s shows are more community oriented. You’ll find open mic stand up nights on Sunday and Wednesday and open jams for improvisers on Monday. SoCap rents and coproduces shows with up-and-coming artists Tuesday and Thursday. Visit on Friday or Saturday night to check out Social Capital Theatre’s signature shows such as The Dating Game and $15 Beer Beer Comedy.

Social Capital Theatre offers a Dramatic Improv Core Program as well as popular weekly Drop-in classes. SoCap’s improv classes offer a fun and educational opportunity for a wide range of skill levels. Comedy Bar Toronto

Located at Bloor and Ossington, Comedy Bar Toronto was founded in 2008 by Gary Rideout Jr. and James Elksnitis. Dedicated to the development of new and pro comedic talent, Comedy Bar puts on entertaining sketch, improv, alternative and stand up shows. Its two stages host over 150 shows a month, offering guests guaranteed giggles seven nights a week.

Comedy Bar Toronto has fostered the talents of plenty of comedians, comedy writers and performers. Celebrated comedians who have taken the stage include Janeane Garofalo, Phil LeMarr, Tim Meadows, and Mark Maron. Considered an incubator for the improv community, it’s no wonder Comedy Bar is considered one of the best comedy clubs in Toronto.

“The Sketchersons,” is a popular weekly sketch show that happens on Sunday nights at 9:30pm. The talented cast write and perform an entirely new show each week! The Underground Cafe

The Underground Cafe is certainly the most niche of the comedy clubs in Toronto. It opened 13 years ago in the Riverside neighbourhood as a cannabis friendly stand-up comedy space. The club’s owner, Puff Mama, describes the concept, “We strive to bring the most exclusive comedy and variety shows to Toronto. We pride ourselves on finding great talent, targeting entertainers that have supported marijuana legalization and freedom of speech.”

All of The Underground Cafe’s events are pro shows. Popular comedians like Scott Thompson, Rory Scovel, and Joe Rogan have performed at the club’s intimate stage in the past. Cannabis fans will love The Underground Cafe’s hilariously titled monthly shows. Our faves include Jokes n’ Tokes, Stoner Queer Comedy Showcase, and an all female comedy experience called The Grind.

Comedy shows at The Underground Cafe run Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If you’re looking for a unique experience visit on Sunday afternoon for Cardboard Buds. The hilarious weekly board game event is hosted by comedians Ted Morris and Christophe Davidson.

Fundraising

The Underground Cafe cannabis community is known for hosting epic fundraisers. Favourites include Canned Laughter, a city wide holiday food drive supported by several comedy clubs in Toronto. Also Kidsmas, which is a fundraiser for youth living in shelters. Our fave is aptly titled Doobies For Boobies, a breast cancer fundraising initiative.

Step inside The Underground Cafe and it feels a bit like you’ve arrived into a stoner speakeasy. The space features a petite lounge, cannabis culture gift shop, and snack store. You can procure all of your favourite munchies from Doritos to Old Dutch chips and Swedish Berries to Tootsie Rolls. At the cafe you’ll find freshly brewed coffee, tea and hot chocolate as well as homemade chocolate chip hemp heart cookies.

Patrons are also permitted to bring food into the show as long as it’s not from a major fast food brand. There are plenty of fabulous restaurants in the neighbourhood and Puff Mama wants her guests to support local businesses.

Absolute Comedy Toronto

Absolute Comedy Toronto is located a short walk from Eglington Station in Midtown. The established stand-up comedy brand also has locations in Ottawa and Kingston. The three clubs are owned by Jason Laurans and his cousin Rick Dorush. Laurans was a comic with Yuk Yuk’s for over 20 years and launched Absolute Comedy Toronto to get into the business side of things. Notable comedians who have graced the Absolute Comedy stage include K Trevor Wilson, Ali Hassan, Mike McDonald and Jon Dore.

Absolute Comedy Toronto is open six nights a week. Step inside and you’ll find a spacious bar, which features a pool table that you can enjoy with friends before the show. The hallway leading to the theatre is covered in signed portraits of famous comics who have performed here in the past. Absolute Comedy Toronto’s theatre seats 230 and features tiered seating that wraps around a central stage.

Food and Drink

Hungry guests at Absolute Comedy Toronto can chose to book “Dinner and a Show” or from an a la carte menu once inside the theatre. Dinner and a Show packages feature an all you can eat buffet which includes roast beef, mashed potatoes, rice pilaf, mixed veggies, chicken-sausage jambalaya, veggie lasagna, two fresh salads, bread and butter, dessert and coffee or tea.

The Bad Dog Theatre Company is an improv theatre located at Bloor and Ossington. Established in 2003, Bad Dog Theatre can actually trace its roots back to 1982 when it was known as Theatresports Toronto. Bad Dog Theatre offers improv classes for drop-in newbies, youth and teens as well as adults serious about honing their skills on stage. Bad Dog Theatre’s improv curriculum is one of the most diverse we’ve seen at comedy clubs in Toronto. Students study longform basics, cinematic action on stage and scene diagnostics. The company’s unique scholarship program is made available to 16 students each year. The scholarship promotes diversity in Toronto’s comedy clubs by offering access to people of colour, women, people over 50 years old, LBGTQ folks and differently-abled persons.

It’s best to eat dinner before heading to Bad Dog Theatre as there isn’t any food available on site. The bar offers standard bar rail as well as top notch brews from Blanche de Chambly, Sapporo, Sleemans, and Brickworks Cider.

Some of the best comedians in Toronto perform at multifaceted venues on weekly comedy nights. These are often the best venues in Toronto to see fresh talent. Enjoy a hilarious night out at the Rivoli, 120 Diner, or Pegasus on Church and you’re also likely to be entertained by live music, cabaret, karaoke, or a drop dead gorgeous Drag Queen.

Rivoli

Located in the heart of Toronto’s trendy Queen West neighbourhood, the Rivoli is a bar, restaurant and performance space that was first established in 1982. The Rivoli originally earned a reputation as one of Canada’s hippest music clubs. Many notable Canadian comedy and musical performers have played on its stage.

The Kids and the Hall got their start here. Mike Myers’ Saturday Night Live German club character Dieter was actually inspired by a Rivoli waiter. Talent scouts from Montreal’s Just for Laughs comedy festival and major TV networks still routinely scour Rivoli’s Monday night comedy showcase.

The best night of the week to visit the Rivoli for a laugh is Monday’s ALTdot Comedy Lounge. It’s the most popular alternative comedy show in the city and has been running for over 20 years. Other popular comedy shows at the Rivoli include Shade and Queer & Present Danger.

The Rivoli is divided into three main areas: the front, the upstairs and the back. The front of the venue is a perfect spot to grab a pre-show sip and nibble. Upstairs you’ll find a pool hall decorated with vintage antique tables. Shows happen in the back room, which is often standing room only so arrive early to grab a good seat.

Pegasus on Church has been a mainstay in Toronto’s LGBT bar scene and will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2019. The popular Toronto gay bar offers weekly LGBT Trivia Nights, Drag Queen Bingo, and a RuPaul’s Drag Race viewing party. Pegasus on Church also offers professional pool tables, shuffleboard, darts, ping pong, pinball, and casino-style gaming slots.

Queer & Present Danger Open Mic on Monday’s is the most popular stand-up comedy offering in Toronto’s Gay Village. Every Monday at 8pm Chanty Marostica hosts QAPD with a strong line-up of the city’s best and brightest up and coming queer comedic talent. Every third Sunday of the month Marostica is joined by Adrienne Fish to host Church Street Comedy, dubbed Toronto’s biggest LGBT comedy showcase. Past queer performers who have graced the stage at Pegasus on Church include Scott Thompson, Elvia Kurt and Gavin Crawford.

Pegasus on Church was the last of the Comedy Clubs in Toronto that I visited after spending two months hopping around town. It was also probably the funniest night of my year. It was refreshing to spend two hours giggling along to jokes that are popular talking points in our community. In over two hours, Queer & Present Danger Open Mic at Pegasus on Church offered tales from lol gay men, lesbians, a trans woman, and bisexual man. What’s clear is that diversity makes the comedy clubs in a Toronto must-see.
