3 Ways to Fix Your Overworked Body Just in Time for the Holidays


It’s that time of year again. The city’s overworked (read: all of us) are pining for a much deserved Christmas vacation so we can rest, relax and connect with friends and family. For those living that 9 to 5 life, tis the season to review your health benefits and ensure you book yourself a few last minute appointments before the year ends and your time runs out.

I recently visited the[fix] in downtown Toronto to chat with three body work experts about how folks like me, who sit for hours on end typing away at their computers all day, can get those nasty kinks out just in time for the holidays.

Located at the crossroads of Yonge and King in Scotia Plaza, the[fix] is a boutique clinic featuring experts in massage, chiropractic and acupuncture. At this point in my travel writing career I’ve had the opportunity to visit hundreds of world class spas around the world. I was curious to test out the clinics three modalities and introduce my body to chiropractic treatment and acupuncture for the first time.

The face of the[fix] is Dr. Liza, a bubbly, always smiling chiropractor who makes regular appearances as a body work expert on The Social and CTV Morning Live.

Massage with Michelle Graham

Since muscle and fascia [a connective tissue that connects everything in the body] attach to joints, she feels that it is important to make sure that they are healthy and functioning properly. By doing so treatment can help to increase mobility, reduce pain and improve function.

Many people assume that all all chiropractors only practice spinal manipulation and that once you start you will have to keep going forever. Acupuncture with Dr. Cregg

Dr. Cregg is both a Chiropractor and Acupuncture provider (hit two birds with one stone!) who utilizes manual techniques to hep his patients return to optimal functioning. Dr. Cregg practices medical acupuncture, a modern treatment approach founded in concepts of neurology, anatomy and physiology. While the same needles and points are used as in traditional acupuncture, points needled are anatomically and neurologically connected to your specific source of pain. Medical acupuncture has been shown to have beneficial results by inducing muscle relaxation, modulating pain, altering your neuroendocrine responses and changing your autonomic activity resulting in an overall relaxation and a feeling of well-being.

I often combine acupuncture with chiropractic care. These two treatment modalities complement each other quite well because of their effects on the muscular and nervous systems. Although both treatments target the muscles and nerves, they take very different approaches towards imparting an effect. When chiropractic and acupuncture are used together in the same treatment session, the patient receives benefits from both.
