Review: Bar C, Calgary

My visit to Bar C was one of the culinary tourism features in my Destination Guide Travel to Calgary Alberta

I was thankful that the sun had been shining all morning and after enjoying a pedestrian urban adventure through Calgary’s downtown core I hustled down to trendy 17th Ave. I walked through the cities famed hipster-ville which featured patios that spilled onto the street, tattoo parlours, vintage stores, clothing boutiques and bustling cafes. With a grumble in my belly I arrived with a smile at Bar C for lunch.

The restaurant features a patio duo with ample opportunity for guests to people watch from the petite space out front or relax in an intimate al fresco alley located between neighbouring Cilantro. The interior is a funky mix of warm wooden table tops which are cooly juxtaposed against dark moody metallic features.

Bar C stands for “contemporary” and offers guests a food and beverage program that is designed to be “easy” so you can enjoy the company at your table rather than over thinking the choices on your menu. Known as a local favourite for late night eats and creative cocktails I very much enjoyed reading through their weekend brunch menu which offers a swath of creative hangover friendly plates such as an Eggs Benedict featuring poached eggs, duck confit, wilted spinach, pumpkin bacon waffle and maltese sauce (can I get an OMG?)

I sat perched in the centre of the dining room for two hours as sips and nibbles whisked under my nose. The Cloud 9 cocktail featuring st germain and ginger lemonade topped with lemon foam wowed while Watermelon + Jalapeno martini offered a nice zing on a hot summers day.

Bar C is owned by Canadian Rocky Mountain Resorts which to my amazement operate their own ranch just outside of Calgary. The CRMR ranch raises a herd of elk, buffalo and caribou which appear on menus across all of their properties. Be sure to sample some of these game centric dishes during your visit and tip your hat to the company’s farm to fork initiative.

Mid afternoon feasting favourites included buffalo tartar, crispy addictive crispy artichoke hearts dipped in citrus aioli, braised bison tacos and a massive elk and chorizo burger.

Special thanks to Tourism Calgary for hosting me as their guest.
