Mommie Dearest is always hunting for new restaurants in Oakville to share with me. She emailed me recently about a new find and mentioned that she really wanted to take me to check it out next time I was in town for a visit. I was planning a trip into Oakville that weekend to take Jonathan to his first ever visit to the Drive In so the stars aligned nicely.
We picked him up at the Go Station and then drove to Bronte’s beautiful waterfront which was awash with glistening sailboats and yachts. The nearby shaded park was teaming with families hosting summer BBQ’s, swing sets a flutter with danging feet and joyous hands flapping in the wind behind pigtails.
We arrived at Plank Restobar the previous home of The Twisted Fork just after 6pm. I immediately fell in love with the design and layout of the place. Plank features an open kitchen and a wee bar with stool side seating for those waiting for a free table in the dining room or couples wanting to just sit and sip. Chef Gordon Goss came over to the table to say hello and chatted with us about his enthusiasm for regional fare. The menu regularly changes each week based on what local ingredients are in season and most readily available.
The drinks list also highlights local microbrews and VQA wines. We spent the evening sipping on a Sauvignon Blanc from Niagara and sampling several small plates. We sat directly in front of a vintage Coca Cola sign which made me smile. The rugged wood accents, old school signage and farmhouse mason jar displays lead me to believe that Oakville has a new favorite space to celebrate.
