Review: Brunch at Frank in the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto

I have been meaning to eat at Frank at the AGO since it first opened its doors. My parents are both members of the Art Gallery of Ontario and drive into the city from Oakville every so often to find inspiration. So when my father invited me to join him for the final day of the Picasso exhibit I jumped at the opportunity.

Marking the only Canadian stop on its world tour, the highly anticipated exhibition Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, was made possible as the museum temporarily closed for renovations, sending its treasures out on a rare world tour. My father and I arrived just before the doors opened and strolled through the busy gallery space for the final hours of its run in Toronto. We had both been to visit the Picasso Museum in Paris during our trip in 2006. It was a thrill to stare at some of Picasso’s most famous works “at home,” while remembering where they originally hung in Paris.

After our tour of the gallery we declared ourselves peckish and decided to plop ourselves at Frank’s bar for a quick bite. A beautiful sculpture juts out from beneath the floor of the dining room directly in front of the kitchen. A clear connection between Frank’s culinary offerings and the art gallery’s artistic forces colliding onto our plates. The brunch offerings at Frank were fantastic and well complimented by a fantastic local beer and wine list. We munched on our brunch while a bartender muddled a few mojitos. Frank offers one of the best brunches I’ve encountered in the city with a clear interest in celebrating our Canadian roots. Not to mention one of the best art collections in North America sitting right next door.

We enjoyed:

Mike Duggan Number 9 IPA

Beavertail Double Bacon Sandwich

peameal bacon, maple cured bacon, 2 year old cheddar, apple butter, apple fennel slaw, beavertail flatbread

Bacon and Croissant

strawberry preserve, fresh cream

#364 restaurant reviewed in Ontario since moving to Toronto in 2010.
