Helen had just arrived in Toronto for her first time. She had a brutal flight from Rome and barely slept. Her flight was delayed and had her checking into her hotel several hours late. I was starving, she was disheveled. We needed to eat. She was going to be staying at a hotel at Richmond and John so I planned for us to eat somewhere super close. Of course I wanted to ensure her first Toronto based meal experience was grossly North American (with special attention to poutine). I have traveled to over 50 countries and am aware that the first meal you eat in any destination is often the most memorable.
So we marched on over to Burger Brats. Helen sampled all of the food I ordered with much enthusiasm. I described poutine like a “curry and chips” for the Canadian drunkard. She instantly picked up on the connection.
