It was absolutely shockingly freezing in Toronto. I was bundled up, sitting on the College Streetcar rubbing my hands together in hopes they would rouge up a bit. I was thrilled to be meeting friends Meaghan, Luke and Diane for lunch at Konichiwa. Two fold: I hadn’t seen any of them for two months due to my Latin American adventure and the Christmas and New Years holidays. So much catching up to do! I had been craving Konichiwa for approximately two full work days. I had read many great things about this authentic Japanese Noodle shop on Baldwin. The idea of sitting with good friends on a cold winters afternoon over warm soup and hot dumplings makes me faint simply from smiling so hard. While slurping up my soup I had flashbacks of my culinary adventures in Japan. Closing my eyes I took myself back to Tokyo’s famed Tsukiji Fish Market where I had the most unbelievable bowl of udon with shrimp tempura on the side of the street.
Service was fantastic: that perfect synergy of Japanese promptness, professionalism and subtle smiles. The interior is decorated with the lore of old Japan: movie posters, old Ramen advertisements and kimono. I was the first to arrive and by the end of our meal the place was packed. I was most impressed that we were the only table that was not Japanese. It seems like home sick Japanese expats love this place (read: authentic). After we all filled up on conversation and restorative broth I got a wee wink from the regal owner standing by the sushi station. My heart jumped out of my chest a bit as I braced again for the cold.
