Review: Taco Bell and KFC, Toronto

So I have a confession to make. I grew up in a family that never, ever ate KFC or Taco Bell. My dad is a doctor and would talk about patients in the hospital that he had met who had gotten sick from eating their chicken. My mother would refer to both restaurants as junk. I had never had a huge compulsion to try their food but after shopping for my Halloween costume this year with Trevor and Erica I decided its best I make up my own mind on this fast food duo.

We rolled into the KFC/Taco Bell restaurant at Dufferin Mall just as it was about to rain. I stared at the gleaming screens with no clue on what to order. I really had to survey what both concepts had to offer so that I could get the best sampling.

We ordered:

Nacho’s Supreme

Fries Supreme

Cheesy Gordita Crunch

Beef Hard Taco

Steak Soft Taco

Cheese Fries

KFC Fried Chicken

I was most “impressed” with the Taco Bell offerings. To be honest I thought their food was going to disgust me but I was pleasantly surprised. The cheese fries that I ordered were so good that I’m embarrassed that I enjoyed them (liquid cheese…um). Trevor and Erica ordered the Supreme’s which I thought were just too much. The “beef” was mealy like a paste and unwelcome. Both tacos I ordered were mediocre, nothing to get excited about. They would sort of be that go to food if you had 3 dollars in your pocket, were hungry and stranded in the middle of no where.

I thought everything about KFC was deplorable. I stared down at my little box of greasy brown chicken and pale flaccid fries with worry. KFC chicken is dreadful. Full of grease and lacking in any real flavor. I would most definitely opt for Swiss Chalet chicken if I were having a craving for poulet. We all left the restaurant feeling nauseated. I couldn’t help but laugh when we got up to leave as Erica pointed out that there was a fly zapper above our booth. I took one last picture to keep it as a fond memory. A background of the Colonel with fluorescent purple bug killer. Classy joint.

#242 restaurant reviewed in Ontario since moving to Toronto in 2010.

So disappointing isn’t it. These fast food chains make millions and kids are getting obese from eating so unhealthily. I remember when I was a kid the Big Mac from McDonald’s was actually “big”. Not now. There was a time when I couldn’t order a “super size” meal because it really was far to big. Now companies are scaling back and charging more. I agree the taste is not good either. Glad I am not a “junk food junkie” – rarely do we eat at fast food chains.
