In Toronto’s east end Leslieville neighborhood sits one of the cities much loved brunch spots, Table 17. The restaurants French rooster mascot hangs above above the doorway on Queen Street East, so it’s not hard to miss. I met with my sister and friend Jonathan Nathaniel for a lovely spring time feast around noon during the Victoria Day Long Weekend. It was a sunny morning and everyone in the city seemed to be out in their walking shoes poking their heads in the shops and cafes on Queen Street.
We enjoyed:
Candied Ginger and Pineapple Muffin
Potato Rosti with Sour Cream
Thick Double Smoked Bacon
Aged Cheddar and wild leek scramble: Country Toast, Green Salad
Farmers Breakfast
Scotch Egg, Ontario Cheddar and Brie, creton (Quebecois style pork rillette) country toast
The Sloppy Giuseppe
Two fried eggs served over traditional Bolognese sauce and frid polenta and green salad
The brunch menu is a creative departure from the typical fare you find at the majority of other establishments in the city (read: no pancakes or eggs benny). The highlights of the menu (and what you must order when you visit): side orders of crispy rosti and their bacon which is crispy thick pork perfection. I was immediately drawn to the farmers platter as I love pork rillette and having a Scotch Egg for breakfast was a refreshing departure from the norm. Table 17 is now marked off my brunch To Do Checklist, I now need to return for dinner. Story to be continued…
