Review: Arepa Cafe, Toronto

For some time now I have been meaning to stop by the funky urban Venezualan foody emporium Arepa Cafe. This past Friday after I sorted myself out well at beer o’clock with a Smirnoff I invited Nathalie Sato my favorite’ist member of The Talent Agency for dinner.

The spot serves up the eponymous Venezuelan arepas snack: cornbread patties filled with various meats and vegetables. Each day the chef chooses an Arepa of the Day which can be purchased in a combo with a local beer from Mill Street Brewery. All arepas are served with a trio of sauces (the red one is hot, the white bottle is an amazingly intense garlic aioli). The Cafe offers a long list of arepas as well as salads and finger foods. The bar menu is short but sweet, including thirst quenching freshly squeezed lemonade.

We enjoyed:

Tank House Ale

carne mechada arepa: shredded flank steak, tomato, garlic, pepper, cumin

Tequenos: stuffed cheese pastry with guacamole

#119 restaurant reviewed in Ontario since moving to Toronto in 2010.

    1. the white sauce is a intense garlic aioli which I smeared over everything!

      YUM!

the food is overpriced for what it is as these things sell for 1/10 the price in Caracas. BUT then again we aren’t in Caracas and the rent on Queen street is a bit steep so I highly suggest a visit!
